History and Values
Johnson Financial Group was founded in 1970 by Samuel C. Johnson with a clear vision: To build a bank rooted in unmatched personal service, community responsibility and long‑term stewardship.
The company began with three people working out of a trailer located at 3 Mile Road and Main Street in Racine, Wisconsin. Sam Johnson was encouraged by his father to place something on that corner that would benefit the community. When he could not persuade another institution to open a branch there, he chose to start a bank himself.
More than 50 years later, Johnson Financial Group has grown into the largest family‑owned bank in Wisconsin, employing more than 850 associates statewide, while remaining grounded in its founding values.
That legacy continues today under the leadership of Sam’s daughter, Chairman Helen Johnson‑Leipold and President and CEO Jim Popp, guiding the organization through prudent decision making, local accountability and a people‑first approach to every client relationship.
